Garden show blooming marvellous

Evening Echo, 11th September 2006

Garden enthusiasts flocked to Leigh-on-Sea Horticultural Society's Autumn Show on Saturday 9th September.

The show boasted so many vegetables on display that two lines of double show benches running the length of Leigh Road Baptist Church Hall had to be used. There were no fewer than 26 exhibits of tomatoes alone. Organisers were forced to display cakes, pastries and jams in the homecraft classes in an adjacent hall.

Horticultural judges Mike Taylor and Heather Brickwood had the difficult talk of deciding which entry should get an award. The Royal Horticultural Society Bronze Medal was given to Marian Wilcox, while Gerald Brazier received a special award for being a close second.

Jim Sanctuary, chairman of the society, said: "The show was very well attended and the judges commented on the high standard of the exhibits considering the very difficult growing season due to the high temperatures and lack of rain."

Leigh-on-Sea Horticultural Society will be holding its Winter Show on November 4 2006.
